Know your water. A detail from sheet 2 of the U.S. Coast Survey’s 1857 chart of Chesapeake Bay, its pale waterways crowded with soundings. Home waters deserve a good chart. Cream and brass on true navy.

From the log: The U.S. Coast Survey, set up under Thomas Jefferson in 1807, measured the shore as a chain of great triangles, then sent boat crews out to sound every channel. By 1857 it was run by Alexander Dallas Bache, Benjamin Franklin’s great-grandson.
