Nantucket Soundings Map T-Shirt
Local knowledge. Shoals, channels and the long curve of Nantucket, from Joseph F. W. Des Barres’s chart of 1776, with its fine linework, soundings and weathered paper. Navy and signal red on white.
From the log: The chart comes from The Atlantic Neptune, the great atlas of the American coast that Des Barres published for the use of the Royal Navy during the American war. The small numbers across the water are soundings: depths found by lowering a weighted line.
