North of Known Arctic Map T-Shirt
The world as once imagined. Four polar islands around a whirlpool at the top of the world, from the colourful 1606 Mercator–Hondius map of the Arctic. Cream and brass on black.
From the log: Gerard Mercator drew the North Pole as a black rock in a whirlpool, ringed by four islands, following a lost medieval account of a voyage north. He died before the map was published in 1595. Jodocus Hondius kept it in print and, for this 1606 edition, added the Spitsbergen coast that Dutch sailors had found in 1596.
