Mind the shoals. Barrier islands, shifting inlets and a compass rose, from the U.S. Coast Survey’s 1861 sketch of the North Carolina coast from Oregon Inlet to Ocracoke Inlet, Cape Hatteras included. Cream and brass on true navy.

From the log: A note on the chart dates the work: the shoals off Cape Hatteras were sounded in 1850, Hatteras and Ocracoke inlets in 1857. Close inshore the depths are in feet; further out, in fathoms. In August 1861, the year of this sketch, a Union fleet took the two forts guarding Hatteras Inlet.
